Having been haRASsed by my evil twin about my sarcopenic sedentariness over the last year, I dropped by the local community pool/gym to check out at drop-in class on "Body Sculpt" "Tone your muscles and shape your body in this strength and cardio class" Present: 5 women of a certain age Activity: Poses of a rather elementary nature Conclusion: why not Objection: mere observation is inadequate Rebuttal: none

I don't feel that fulfilling your duty as their employee, and taking their required training for their job while awaiting a possible other job constitutes a bridge-burning. If you decided to take the training because 'fuck them' and you run up the minibar and porno bills and then promptly post your hand-written-while-drunk-on-the-minibar resignation for all of your co-workers to see on the internal email system message list, then it's a reputation issue. If you take the training because you don't know when the other company will-or ever-hire you, and you just happen to get hired a few weeks after, and you politely resign and thank them for everything, then your reputation shouldn't be too bad off. We all have to do what we have to do to survive. You need to find yourself a way to survive without this job...unless you can't find other employment. You also need to be a good employee in the event that you stay longer than you intend.

It's more like I'm struggling with an account than my job, per se. My job is great, but I have some challenges with some folks at my company who are choosing not to heed my advice on some key subjects, and who are simultaneously asking me to do a thing without providing me key information. It leads to circular calls and some account folk who are basically asking me to approve something without enough information that I don't honestly control the approval of. All this is because they are too fucking weak to ask said account to justify the thing they are doing. This is the whole reason for my squat session going way over the top today. I Killed my squat session, and then knew I needed to hit some heavy singles afterwards. I was so frustrated after the call that I just needed some physicality to straighten my head out. A1 Squats 45x10 135x5 185x3 225x3 275x1 345x3x4S 345xAMRAP (x10) 405x1 455x1 495x1 All 3 singles were done as pauses, because fuck the weights. Skipped benching, because I got into a cool discussion with a friend of mine at the gym and preferred to shoot the shit.

Not burning bridges is more about tending to your reputation than fulfilling obligations to your outgoing employer. From another perspective: When interviewing candidates, I usually check LinkedIn to find any mutual connections. If I know someone who worked with the candidate in the past, I might contact them for a backchannel reference. You learn a lot about candidates by how they treated their peers during the tough times or toward the end of their tenure at a company. It's the difference between "He was a good guy, but they put him in a tough situation so he eventually left for greener pastures" vs. "He was good at first, but he burned us at the end". The details of your circumstances will be lost to history as soon as you leave, but your behavior in your last few months is remembered for a long, long time. Not exactly fair, but it's how things work.

Slow Wave Sleep reduces anxiety "Deep sleep had restored the brain's prefrontal mechanism that regulates our emotions, lowering emotional and physiological reactivity and preventing the escalation of anxiety," On a societal level, “the findings suggest that the decimation of sleep throughout most industrialized nations and the marked escalation in anxiety disorders in these same countries is perhaps not coincidental, but causally related,” Walker said. “The best bridge between despair and hope is a good night of sleep. https://news.berkeley.edu/2019/11/04/deep-sleep-can-rewire-the-anxious-brain/

Here's the basic principle: You want enough fluidity that the particles distribute evenly and easily (with shaking or stirring, for example) You want enough viscosity that they remain suspended long enough to draw a homogeneous sample.

    AI and Machine Learning thread

I'm somewhat intrigued by this study https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2019-11/bcom-dnn110419.php One innovation is to use a "mesoscope" to measure the activity of a large number of neurons simultaneously. This is the kind of development I've been waiting for. https://bmcbiol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12915-017-0426-y First, measure the activity of neuron populations in response to thousands of images. Then develop an artificial neural net to mimic that neural activity. Then, give the artificial neural net new images, and see how its simulated neurons respond. Compare the simulated output to how brains respond to those same images. "To test whether the network had indeed learned to predict neural responses to visual images like a living mouse brain would do, we showed the network images it had not seen during learning and saw that it predicted the biological neuronal responses with high accuracy," If the method continues to work with other brain data, this could accelerate both AI and brain modeling. (Whether this leads to good or evil is another question)

    The Sleep Thread 😴

I'd just like to note for the record that triazolam (Halcion) is the best drug I have ever used for insomnia, bar none. At 0.125mg it permits rather than induces sleep...I drift off like I've never had insomnia and my sleep for the next six hours is deep and refreshing and I wake up with no hangover....it is, of course, a benzo so is subject to all of the liabilities of that class of drugs but as a sleep aid, it is truly remarkable. I'd love to be able to take it every night but given the issues with tolerance and dependence that exist with this class of drugs, I will reserve it only for special circumstances.

I have stopped vomiting. It tasted like bile. Disgusting. I'm gonna eat based on feel today then hopefully tomorrow I can carb load. I took a shitload of TUDCA and I think it really helped clear out my liver because I had the darkest urine I've ever seen followed by fairly good looking urine. I might be in seriously bad condition had I never known about TUDCA. They couldn't figure out how my liver looked "okay" at various times with such high viral loads and I think it must be the TUDCA and taurine. Maybe the fact that I've been lifting consistently for 16 years has something to do with my ability to cheat death so many times lol. I've survived two flat-line overdoses, a heart attack that resulted in no damage, and now this. I knew I was part Saiyan.

On days I lift I really nail it, but on off days I'm going through these ugly cycles of missing meals one day, followed by overeating total trash the next day to compensate, followed by a correction on the next day that stresses me out. Overall the main goal of recompositioning is still completely intact, and I'm still at 235 even after carbing up today and drinking lots of fluids and electrolytes. I'm making progress on my strength, and my legs, teres, and yoke are gaining size. But I am not really improving too well on my endurance, as I'm seeing tradeoffs between accessories and my main lifts. That's actually fine in many ways, and it is obviously a result of my diet not meeting the requirements to push all these metrics forward without sacrificing recomp effects. I am merely reporting what I am experiencing and documenting for my own records.

I vote for agave. Throw that shit on some french toast and watch the gain train roll into the station. Aside from that, I also suggest glycerin. It's a good call. Every liquid suspension I ever came across during my time in preclinical testing was prepared in glycerin of varying viscosities. That's as theoretically close as you can get in pharma to homebrewing and it's chosen for a reason.

    Liftin' weights and other shit

It's funny that you mention this. I found that after taking most of a year off and canceling my gym memberships and whatnot, that I felt the exact same way. The only way I've been able to stomach returning to the gym with regularity was to go to a location that I rarely/never went and therefore wouldn't know anyone. For me, anonymity is the key, as opposed to familiarity. If I was in your shoes and had to be at a different place every week, I'd be OK, I think. I'd go in, not give any fucks about what the other patrons thought of me, do a few workouts in a week, and then move onto the next shithole. Anyways: I totally understand how you are feeling. I had a hard time understanding it, because I haven't felt that way since ~12 years ago when I walked into a gym for the first time since high school.

GDPR is actually a real thing. Taken seriously by real companies...that said, it only applies to business in the EU. There are some companies, like mine, who went overboard in the US and decided GDPR for all was the right move, but I think we're few and far between on that one. I didn't protect my name or information. Part of me regrets that, but I haven't taken steps to un-do it, either. I totally can, but I just haven't seen the need. I suppose when the fascist capitalist government is put in place and the government allows data-sharing between 23andme and insurance companies for rate-setting and denial of service, I'll regret it...

Indeed. In fact, I vaguely recall an article by a renown lifter about how bad this is for the spine - the 1-2" range of motion in your lumbar does nothing for muscle growth, and in fact doesn't actually do anything with the weight you're holding (does the weight move at all vertically?), but it does put a tremendous amount of unnecessary force on the SI joint.

Thanks, guys. Always good wisdom or reminders here. Rolo/Kim, I hadn't really thought of it from that direction but I wasn't super into the % per se. I know I need to drastically improve my quad strength based on the numbers however. I just need to beef these bad boys up until they aren't the limiting factor in my comp squat. And I know that all squats pretty much hit the quads the same theoretically, but my execution and the recovery issues play into using the front squat as a primary builder. Sam, I will listen. I've already started doing that, but don't have a DL day because the recovery needs to be spent on legs for now. I'm pretty basic right now but I'll gear into more of what you're saying as I get things rolling along. Gimme a little while to get my base back lol

Thank you, that kinda confirms the rest. I need a 350X5 or 405X1 front squat. My DL will just "be" 600 or 650 if I get my squat up to 500, and it's always been like that. My quads are absolutely the limiting factor, no doubt. It's one of those glaringly obvious things that nobody would disagree about.

J Nutr. 2019 Oct 16. pii: nxz249. doi: 10.1093/jn/nxz249. [Epub ahead of print] Protein Intake to Maximize Whole-Body Anabolism during Postexercise Recovery in Resistance-Trained Men with High Habitual Intakes is Severalfold Greater than the Current Recommended Dietary Allowance. Mazzulla M1, Sawan SA1, Williamson E1, Hannaian SJ1, Volterman KA1, West DWD1, Moore DR1. Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. BACKGROUND: Dietary protein supports resistance exercise-induced anabolism primarily via the stimulation of protein synthesis rates. The indicator amino acid oxidation (IAAO) technique provides a noninvasive estimate of the protein intake that maximizes whole-body protein synthesis rates and net protein balance. OBJECTIVE: We utilized IAAO to determine the maximal anabolic response to postexercise protein ingestion in resistance-trained men. METHODS: Seven resistance-trained men (mean ± SD age 24 ± 3 y; weight 80 ± 9 kg; 11 ± 5% body fat; habitual protein intake 2.3 ± 0.6 g·kg-1·d-1) performed a bout of whole-body resistance exercise prior to ingesting hourly mixed meals, which provided a variable amount of protein (0.20-3.00 g·kg-1·d-1) as crystalline amino acids modeled after egg protein. Steady-state protein kinetics were modeled with oral l-[1-13C]-phenylalanine. Breath and urine samples were taken at isotopic steady state to determine phenylalanine flux (PheRa), phenylalanine excretion (F13CO2; reciprocal of protein synthesis), and net balance (protein synthesis - PheRa). Total amino acid oxidation was estimated from the ratio of urinary urea and creatinine. RESULTS: Mixed model biphasic linear regression revealed a plateau in F13CO2 (mean: 2.00; 95% CI: 1.62, 2.38 g protein·kg-1·d-1) (r2 = 0.64; P ˂ 0.01) and in net balance (mean: 2.01; 95% CI: 1.44, 2.57 g protein·kg-1·d-1) (r2 = 0.63; P ˂ 0.01). Ratios of urinary urea and creatinine concentrations increased linearly (r = 0.84; P ˂ 0.01) across the range of protein intakes. CONCLUSIONS: A breakpoint protein intake of ∼2.0 g·kg-1·d-1, which maximized whole-body anabolism in resistance-trained men after exercise, is greater than previous IAAO-derived estimates for nonexercising men and is at the upper range of current general protein recommendations for athletes. The capacity to enhance whole-body net balance may be greater than previously suggested to maximize muscle protein synthesis in resistance-trained athletes accustomed to a high habitual protein intake.
